Claim evidence reasoning (CER) is a writing strategy that aims to help students make connections with science concepts & labs. With this strategy, a student will think like a scientist. What Does Claim Evidence Reasoning Mean?
Claim evidence reasoning consists of 3 parts:
- Claim
It is a statement answering the question. It usually comes in one sentence only. It doesn’t include any evidence, reasoning, or explanation.
- Evidence
It is the data used to support the claim. This can be either qualitative or quantitative. It depends on the question or/and lab. It can be a data table the student creates. The evidence should support the claim.
- Reasoning
It is the explanation of “why & how” the evidence supports the claim. This explains the underlying science concept producing the date or evidence.
How to Implement Claim Evidence Reasoning into the Classroom
